One-Way History

You've probably all seen the picture below. It shows workers who built the transcontinental railroad and drove the golden spike at Promentory, Utah. Well I was wondering, if that was the only railroad at the time in that area, then did they drive the trains backwards all the way back to where they started from? This wasn't in the history books...
